Sephardic Jewish community may now apply for Portuguese citizenship

Effective, March 1st, 2015, members of the Sephardic Jewish communities of Portuguese origin are entitled to apply for Portuguese citizenship according to the latest change to the Law of Nationality (Decree-Law 37/81, October 3rd), under Decree-Law 30-A/2015, published in the Official Journal, on February 27th, 2015.

According to the new regulation, Portugal’s Government may grant Portuguese nationality by naturalization to descendants of Sephardic Portuguese Jews who can provide proof of their connection to Portugal, namely, but not limited to, surnames, family speaking language and direct or indirect descent.

Sephardic Jews can apply for the citizenship directly from where they currently reside and are exempt from the Portuguese language knowledge requirement.
